Hanni Liang: “Broken”

  • Palazzo 190 Rue Théodore Verhaegen Saint-Gilles, Bruxelles, 1060 Belgium (map)

Our next DAS HAUS concert is coming up on December 16th and it promises to be another Saturday night worth leaving the house for. We’re welcoming the German-Chinese pianist Hanni Liang in our cosy midst with a new musical concept on the perfection of imperfection.

In this performance, aptly named ‘Broken’, Hanni Liang offers a biographical perspective on the search for and pressure of perfection. Through her upbringing in a very strict family with high expectations, she learned to actively seek the beauty in imperfections and find her artistic voice through it. She zooms out and reflects on the current state of the world as well. More and more often we are influenced by images of perfectionism, often fueled by new technologies and social media. This concert, with piano music by female composers such as Ethel Smyth, Eleanor Alberga and Caroline Shaw, is a plea to abandon the high social expectations in a no-error culture and to go back to the most human thing to be: imperfect.

Hanni Liang is a pianist, concert creator, lecturer at the University of Music and Theatre Munich and founder of the TONALiSTEN Collective. Working in the field of new performance practice she is constantly searching for the "why" in her projects. Next to concerts in the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, for example as soloist with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, the Piano Festival Ruhr, Mariinsky Theatre, Forbidden City Concert Hall or Kurhaus Wiesbaden, she creates performances and participatory concerts which all artistically emphasise topics of the now. In cooperation with festivals like Heidelberger Frühling, Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele, Reeperbahn Festival or Mozartfest Würzburg, she seeks to open the classical repertoire to a room of enhancements and exchanges. The next season sees her in performance projects together with Konzerthaus Berlin, Pinakothek der Moderne, Haus Styriarte Graz and Nottingham Concert Hall among others.

Come as your own perfectly imperfect self and connect with like-minded music lovers through humanity. Another DAS HAUS performance not to be missed. We’ll see you on December 16th!
