Kate Moore: “Inside Out”

  • Palazzo 190 Rue Théodore Verhaegen Saint-Gilles, Bruxelles, 1060 Belgium (map)

DAS HAUS is on a roll! After two captivating concerts by Victor Somma and Djuwa Mroivili we can safely say, the third time will also be a charm. On March 23rd Dutch-Australian composer Kate Moore takes us behind the scenes of her creative process and shows you an intimate portrait of a composer.

Inside Out (A Beautiful Path) is the uncovering of a musical trajectory which is often found behind closed doors or in isolation. For the first time ever, Kate Moore allows the public to look inside - inside her studio, inside her scores, inside her mind. The pieces she’ll be performing on a multitude of string instruments were written during the pandemic or during a long-distance trip through nature, where only silence and privacy were accompanying her. But is that creative process, usually hidden away, not a performance in its own right?

Offering a glimpse into the creation of a new piece comes with a fragility that we don’t often get to experience on stage. The composer becomes a performer, taking on a role that at times feels unnatural, maybe uncomfortable. The ‘work in progress’ becomes final. The loneliness of the studio now becomes an act in the spotlight, seen by many. The audience becomes a fly on the wall, almost intruding on a private space.

Kate Moore is an internationally acclaimed composer who holds a doctorate from the Sydney University Conservatorium of Music, a master’s from The Royal Conservatory of The Hague and an honours degree from the Australian National University. Her works are performed by Asko|Schönberg, Bang on a Can, Icebreker, Slagwerk Den Haag, Ensemble Offspring, the Australian String Quartet, The Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and Groot Omroepkoor, among others. In 2017, Moore was awarded the prestigious Dutch composition award, The Matthijs Vermeulen Prize, and in 2022 the Gieskes-Strijbis Podiumprijs for her contribution to the performing arts. She has also been a recipient of the MacDowell Colony and Yaddo fellowship, a Tanglewood composition fellowship and Civitella Ranieri Fellowship.

Come with an open mind and a wish to connect. You can finally observe the brain of a composer from within. We can’t wait to see you on March 23rd!
